🌍 Water, Forests, and the Future of Humanity: A Call to Act
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
On this World Water Day 2026, we stand united in our commitment to advocate for our most precious resource: water. As I represented the global water community at the FAO Headquarters in Rome for the World Water Day and the International Day of Forests, I want to emphasize a critical message: We must make the voice of water heard.
We extend our gratitude to Lifeng Li, Director of the Land and Water Division at the Food and Agriculture Organization, for fostering dialogue that bridges the agricultural and water sectors. Our discussions illuminated three urgent priorities that demand our immediate attention:
💧 Water & Health
Access to clean water is not just a necessity—it’s a matter of dignity and health. Waterborne diseases continue to pose a significant risk to lives worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that innovation in water systems can lead to progress. Let’s harness this momentum to ensure safe water for all.
🌾 Water for Food
Feeding a growing global population is one of our greatest challenges. Collaboration with institutions like the FAO is essential to develop sustainable agricultural practices that prioritize water conservation.
🌳 Water & Nature
The interdependence between water and forests cannot be overstated. Forests play a vital role in regulating water cycles and supporting ecosystems. Yet, they face grave threats from deforestation, pollution, and urbanization. We must:
- Protect forests as essential « natural infrastructure ».
- Prevent pollution at its source.
- Invest in water storage solutions that benefit both people and nature.
As we look forward, the next World Water Forum will dedicate one of its key themes to “Water and Nature,”setting the stage for global action. Let’s transform awareness into action because protecting water and forests is synonymous with protecting life itself.
⚖️ A Matter of Rights and Responsibility
Water is a human right, and so is access to nature. International law mandates the protection of essential resources for survival. We must advocate for policies that uphold these rights for every individual.
👩 Inclusion is Key
Women are leaders in water and environmental solutions. Their involvement is crucial to achieving concrete and sustainable outcomes.
💬 Remember: Women are not only part of the future; they are the present of humanity.
Together, let’s shift the narrative: from merely understanding the cost of water to recognizing its immeasurable value. Join us in this vital mission.
Happy World Water Day!
