A look back at the UN Water Conference

The World Water Council participated to the United Nations Water Conference from March 22 to 24, 2023 in New York

    • Edito by Loïc Fauchon : "Present in New York"

In New York, the lanterns are now off.
The water festival has come to an end with nearly 6,500 delegates from over 185 countries.
As in all major international conferences, and especially at the UN, some will see the glass as half full as priority was given to water. Others will see the half-empty glass due to the absence of a specific commitment and concrete decision. Both are probably right.
The World Water Council was very present during these days through its participation in more than 15 events, during which we were able to put forward its positions, arguments, and proposals on the major issues of the moment.
In particular, the role of local authorities, the importance of Basins, the place of water for Nature, disaster management, and others.
With our Indonesian colleagues, we have highlighted the 10th World Water Forum in May 2024 in Bali every day and every hour.
And finally, we pointed out again and again that “water is politics”, underlining that only the will and commitment of political actors will make it possible to shed light on the daily lives of several billion people.
The New York meeting was already useful for this.
