    This year’s World Water Day on the theme of “water and jobs” provides the perfect opportunity to highlight some of the main conclusions of World Water Council’s program on Water and Green Growth, conducted with the Government of the Republic of Korea from 2010 to 2015. This cooperation led to the launch of its final report at the 7th World Water Forum in April of last year.

    The idea of forming a ‘world water council’ to unite efforts in global water management was first proposed in 1992 at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Dublin and at the first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Over the next few years, there was much discussion and debate to establish the vision, objectives and scope of activities for such an organization. This culminated with the creation of the World Water Council, which was registered in Marseille in June of 1996. This year, 2016, the World Water Council is proud to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

    Davos, Switzerland, 21 January 2016 – The Secretary-General of the United Nations and the President of the World Bank have announced today their intention to form a new panel to mobilize urgent action towards the sustainable development goal for water and sanitation (SDG6) and related targets.  The announcement was made at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2016 and comes days after WEF’s Global Risk Report 2016 lists water as the number one global risk of highest concern in the next ten years, and fifth year in a row as a top three global risk of highest impact.

    news : El Consejo elige Junta de Gobernadores para el período 2016-2018

    La Junta de Gobernadores del Consejo Mundial del Agua ha sido elegida en el marco de la 7ª Asamblea General del mismo, por un mandato de tres años hasta el 2018. Las elecciones se llevaron a cabo durante la Asamblea General trienal de los miembros del WWC en Marsella, Francia, donde más de 250 personas procedentes de 40 países se han dado cita. La Junta apoyará al Presidente Braga durante los próximos tres años en la implementación de una estrategia enfocada en la seguridad hídrica, la adaptación y la sostenibilidad, la cual fue aprobada el día de hoy durante la 7ª Asamblea General.

    The World Water Council has announced it is founding partner for the first edition the Financial Times Water Summit.  The event will take place in London on 27 October and will bring together the financial community as well as large corporates and political leaders, to focus on collaborative ways in which companies around the world are working with the broader water community to deal with scarcity and enable growth.

    On the occasion of World Water Week, the World Water Council signed two agreements extending collaboration with its Korean partners. The agreements were signed just after a special session that was convened by the World Water Council and the 7th World Water Forum secretariat to present the major outcomes of the 7th World Water Forum. A first agreement was signed between the World Water Council and K-Water on the important role technology and big data can play in smart water management.

    “Water security is probably the greatest human challenge of this century – it is at the heart of a daily crisis faced by millions… It is also the lifeblood of our economy, our environment and our very wellbeing,” said World Water Council President Benedito Braga at the closing plenary of this year’s World Water Week in Stockholm. The theme of this year’s 25th edition was Water and Development, and the Council was actively represented throughout the week at a number of sessions and debates.
