Catalyzing collective action on water in the Sustainable Development Goals and the HLPF

Earlier this month, the World Water Council reached out to the 7th World Water Forum Implementation Roadmap Champions in order to provide strong inputs, on behalf of the water community, to the preparatory process of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which will be held from 10 to 19 July 2017.

Catalyzing the strong determination of the global water community to implement collective actions on priority water-related issues, the Roadmaps and DGIC Champions benefit from a strategic and comprehensive vision relative to various water related issues such as - food security, health, poverty reduction, women’s empowerment, environmental protection, as well as sustaining economic growth in agriculture, industry, and energy generation, just to name a few.

The HLPF aims at providing high-level policy guidance and promote and review the implementation of sustainable development. With the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) an ambitious and transformational agenda has been set out. However, water development and management underpin all future of this global endeavor, and cooperative water actions are central to its success.

These interlinkages and integrated nature of the Sustainable Development Goals are of crucial importance in realizing this ambitious agenda. As such, the Roadmaps are well placed to make a substantive contribution to the overall means of implementation.

The year 2018 will be a strategic milestone for water.  Not only the 8th World Water Forum will take place in March, in Brasilia, Brasilia; but the Goal dedicated to water, the SDG 6, will be reviewed by the HLPF. As such, the whole water community will be mobilized to inscribe water as highly as possible on the international political agenda.
