Mobilizing local and regional authorities for political engagement towards water
In the framework of the preparatory process of the 5th International Conference of the Local and Regional Authorities for Water, two meetings were organized on 22 November 2017 and 8 December 2017. Through these inclusive and participative meetings, the organizers of the Conference sought inputs from mayors and governors to ensure alignment between the programme, the outcomes and Local and Regional Authorities’ concerns.
On 22 November 2017, together with the Undersecretary for Federal Issues of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil, the World Water Council welcomed 120 Mayors and Governors in Brasilia, Brazil, to raise global awareness on the goals for the 8th World Water Forum and water management in cities.
Building on this meeting, a second gathering was organized on 8 December 2017 during the UCLG World Council to promote discussions on the water aspects of various international agendas and to evaluate the political Call for Action of Local and Regional Authorities to be adopted during the Conference. It was also the occasion to increase the mobilization of interested stakeholders.
Together with the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA/UN-Habitat), the Brazilian Confederation of Municipalities (CNM) and the Undersecretary for Federal Issues of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil, the World Water Council (WWC) plans on organizing a third and final preparatory meeting open to the public during the 9th World Urban Forum, from 7 to 13 February 2018.
The 5th International Conference of the Local and Regional Authorities for Water will be held on 20 and 21 March 2018, with a special focus on the water actions that cut across multiple international agendas. To this end, the World Water Council and its partners will launch during the Conference their latest publication: A guide for Putting water on local action agendas to support global change with concrete example of innovative implementation practices.
