Council at the UN: Act Collectively to Anticipate Disasters

“We know what needs to be done. We just need the courage to do it,” said the President of the World Water Council, Ben Braga, on 6 March in the Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters at the United Nations in New York. In the presence of the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, he encouraged the world community to change the approach to water related disasters and act collectively to anticipate the challenges. “The post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals should indicate how to treat this issue as a pre-requisite for further sustainable and equitable development in the future,” said President Braga. The session – an initiative of the Secretary General and his Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation - gathered the world’s experts and high level representatives to share experiences and discuss ways forward towards global actions.
