Description of your Organisation's activities : SUEN is a national think tank established to develop national water policies, provide consultation to decision makers, coordinate between organizations & institutions and enhance scientific research and strategic ideas with a focus on creating a common platform for water management. SUEN works in cooperation with national and international water-related institutions on issues such as sustainable water management, developing water policies, sustainable energy and capacity building for solving local and global water problems.

background : Prof. Ahmet Mete Saatçi received his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1972. He obtained his MSc in the same field in 1973. Between 1973 and 1976, he worked as an assistant in the Department of Environmental Engineering at İstanbul Technical University. He worked at Iowa State University from 1976 to 1979 and there he obtained his doctorate degree in 1979. He became associate professor in 1985 and professor in 1991. He worked at the University of King Abdul Aziz between 1980 and 1990. He established the Environmental Engineering Department in Marmara University and served as Head of Department from 1990 to 2011. With a broad teaching experience, he lectured in undergraduate and graduate courses in Turkey and abroad on environmental engineering, water chemistry, unit operations, water and wastewater treatment plant design, operation and modelling. He gave seminars for water and wastewater treatment plant operators. He worked as a consultant to water and sewerage administrations of more than twelve cities in Turkey and abroad including Istanbul, Bursa, Fethiye, Antalya, Siirt, Istanbul, Konya, and Samsun. He supervised various M.S. and Ph.D. studies in Turkey and other countries. He is the author of numerous papers, critiques and conference proceedings published in international journals. Prof. Saatçi was a member of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) Scientific Committee between 2005 and 2011. He served as Vice Secretary General of the 5th World Water Forum held in Istanbul in 2009. During this mission, he gave speeches in 18 countries (Japan, USA, Brazil, Turkey, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, Israel, Italy, France, Bosnia, Egypt, Tunisia, Spain, Cyprus, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Bulgaria). Prof. Saatçi is currently the President of SUEN. He served as the President of the European Network of Basin Organizations (Europe-INBO) for the 2012-2013 period. He is a member of the World Water Council Board of Governors and Governing Board of UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education. He is an observer in the European Environmental Agency Scientific Committee. He also serves as the Vice Chairman of Ilisu Dam and HEPP Project Scientific Committee.

background : Aslıhan Kerç received her B.Sc. from Istanbul Technical University, M.Sc. from Marmara University and Ph.D. from Boğaziçi University in the field of environmental engineering. She started her academic career as a research assistant at Marmara University and continues to serve as an associate professor at the same university. Her research interests are water and wastewater treatment with chemical and advanced oxidation techniques, water reuse, micro-pollutants, and water management. Dr. Kerç represented the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) in European Science Foundation (ESF) as a member of the Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences Standing Committee between 2005 and 2011. Since 2012, she has been working as the Project Development and Implementation Coordinator at Turkish Water Institute (SUEN). She represents SUEN in OECD Water Governance Initiative, Water JPI, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and World Water Council. She also serves as the chair of UNEP Global Wastewater Initiative (GW2I) since 2015.

For what reasons do you wish your organisation to have a seat on the Board of Governors ? SUEN works in cooperation with national and international water-related institutions on issues such as sustainable water management, developing water policies, sustainable energy and capacity building for solving local and global water problems.
