Description of your Organisation's activities : The National Water Research Center (NWRC) is a pioneer institution for various water research activities in Egypt. It was established in 1975 as a research entity within the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI), Egypt. Under the umbrella of NWRC, twelve research institutes exert concerted efforts to implement a comprehensive research plan serving on-going projects and national development plans in general. Each of the twelve institutes is concerned with one research discipline in the field of water engineering and related water issues. Besides, NWRC established a Strategic Research Unit, a Central Laboratory for Environmental Quality Monitoring, a Geographic Information System, Information/ Documentation Center, and a highly specialized Central Library. NWRC pursues a well-formulated applied research strategy to handle the following activities: • Maintain continuity, credibility and sustainability of applied research programs to cope with the requirements of the governmental and private sectors. • Adopt appropriate technology transfer programs to improve and promote research performance. • Strengthen the link between applied research and executing agencies. • Establish a strong infrastructure foundation. The ultimate objective of NWRC is to optimize water use, minimize different water losses and maximize water availability while the specific objectives can be formulated as follows: • Study, outline and propose long-term policies for managing water resources in Egypt. • Solve the technical and applied problems associated with general policies for irrigation, drainage and water resources. • Carry out investigations and research work connected with the extension of agricultural lands. • Find the means for utilizing the water resources of the country in the most efficient and cost-effective way. • Propose measures for environmentally sound development of the irrigation and drainage systems.

Organisation statement:
Please describe the involvement of your organisation within the World Water Council and state how long it has been involved in World Water Council activities : Nobody can deny the achievements and the successes of the WWC since its establishment in the 1990’s, but yet there is still a lot of rules to be changed and new roles to be played in order to insure a Sustainable Water Future (SWF). Since, we are living in a complex world, a lot of challenges are ahead of us whether it is known for many of us such as Global Warming and climate change and their impact on water resources, food, energy, quality of water and life…. etc., and/or new for many of us. The NWRC of Egypt lies in the North of Africa, downstream of the River Nile, South of the Mediterranean and at the heart of the Old World. Gained experiences out of the NWRC research in these multiple geographical areas as well as the long history of these regions and the new wave of the Arab Spring would lead us to the linkages of the new challenges facing the Sustainable Water Future (SWF) beyond the technical issues such as, the population explosion, the stability of the political systems, availability of funds for new infra structures, environmental degradation, illegal immigration, forced immigration and the difficulties of managing water crises in the fragile regions. Forums of the council have been a good tool to address the water issues globally and the Ministerial Decelerations did help in increasing awareness of water issues, but still there is a need for new messages at the Regional National, and local levels. NWRC was deeply involved in all Water World Forums (from Marrakesh 1997 to Brasilia 2018) in all different processes and willing to involve throughout the following; • By active participation in all activities and studies, and supporting the implementation of council road maps from 8th world water forum. • By play an active role in determining strategies for the Council and the World Water Forum through supporting the implementation of programmes and activities
For what reasons do you wish your organisation to have a seat on the Board of Governors ? Contribution and support to the Council could be through many activities of which are the following: • Convey WWC messages to African & Arab countries through various NWRC programs, links, and networks • Develop new specific capacity building and awareness programs towards implementing water quality assessment activities to help Arab and African countries to meet the SDGs. • Bridging the technological gap and needed technologies between developed and developing countries for improving water resources management within the African and Arab regions • Promote WWC policy notes within Arab and Africa countries. • Deeply involved in the different activities of WWC.
