Description of your Organisation's activities : “Azersu” OJSC is an organization that supplies drinking water and sanitation services in a centralized manner. The Company makes necessary arrangements for extraction of water from sources followed by treatment, transportation and sales. It also takes necessary actions for wastewater treatment. The Company engages in design, construction, operation and maintenance of intake structures, reservoirs, pumping stations, water pipelines and sewer collectors. “Azersu” OJSC supplies drinking water to 1434738 subscribers across the country. Total served subscribers include 1377702 household and around 57036 non-households. There are 18244 kilometers of water transmission lines, 3507 km of sewer and storm water lines under control of “Azersu” OJSC. At present, projects are being implemented for reconstruction of water supply and sewerage systems in urban and rural areas of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The projects are financed using state funds and loans allocated by international financing institutions. The number of employees of "Azersu" OJSC is 12500 according to status data as 1 January 2018.

background : Gorkhmaz Huseynov was appointed to the post of “Azersu” OJSC in 2011. The Reconstruction of water supply and sewerage system and Implementation of main projects using high innovativ technologies are the main priorities of Chairman. Gorkhmaz Huseynov organized the base of construction of Jeyranbatan Water Treatment Ultra-Filtration Plant. The facility with a capacity 6 m/s will be constructed in 1,2 area. Master Plan of water supply, wastewater systems of Baku city and districts was prepared under his direction. The Central Laboratory was opened in “Azersu” OJSC. “Water problems, Science and Technology” journal was published. On April 2013, Caspian International Water Technologies Forum was held in Baku. The Forum was held in paralel with Caspian International Water Technologies(CATEF 2013). On April 10, 2014 the second Caspian International Technologies Exhibition and Conference (CATEC 2014) was held in Baku. " The first Baku International Water Week" was held between 14-18 March, 2017. 61st Board of Governors Meeting, 4th Streering Commitee Meeting of 8th World Water Forum, 100th anniversary of Shollar-Baku Water pipeline were held within the frame of "The first Baku International Water Week".

background : Professor Farda Imanov is currently the Deputy Director of the “Sukanal” Scientific Research and Design Institute of “Azersu” OJSC. He is also head of the Hydrometeorology Department of Baku State University. From 2011 to 2016 Imanov worked as the Dean of Geography Faculty of Baku State University. Professor Imanov’s research and professional activities includes 224 publications, as well as working as the National Coordinator on several regional projects (supported by UNDP, GEF, SIDA and UNECE) which carried out on the Kura River Basin in the South Caucasus since 2002. Professor Imanov is an active participant of world water forums, international water summits, conferences and workshops were held in USA, Japan, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and others. He is alternate of World Water Council since 2016. From 2005 he is the Chairman of the IHP Azerbaijan National Committee.

Please describe the involvement of your organisation within the World Water Council and state how long it has been involved in World Water Council activities : “Azersu” OJSC has been a member of World Water Council since 2013. With the support of “Azersu” OJSC a lot of water organizations of Azerbaijan participated in different events, organized by World Water Council. On December 2011 and February 2012, “Azersu” Delegation visited the kick-off meeting of 6th World Water Forum which was held in Paris, in Headquarters of UNESCO. On March 12-17 March, 2012 the 6th World Forum held in Marseille, France. Azerbaijan Delegation led by Deputy Chairman for operation was active in discussions. Deputy Chairman for operation stated in Round Table on Water and Sanitation and informed participants on works done for improvement on water resources. On May 14-15, 2013, VII World Water Forum kick-off meeting was held in Daegu-Gyengbuk, Republic of Korea. A delegation of “Azersu” OJSC visited Republic of Korea. At the meeting preparation issues of the Forum include integrated water resources management, climate change and water security, drinking water supply and sanitation services. Budapest Üater Summit held in Hungary on 8-11, 2013 was remarkable for “Azersu” OJSC in term of future cooperation and respective development. “Azersu” took part at the exhibition on management water sources and sewerage service organized in the frame of summit. The stands of Azersu were demonstrated at the exhibition that more than 40 countries participated. On October 27-28, 2014 the 53rd meeting of the World Water Council Board of Governors was held in Marseille, France. At the meeting the participants have been informed about the water supply and sewerage reconstruction projects and issues of mutual interest were discussed. On November 12-15, 2014 the 12th European Conference (Europe INBO 2014) on the implementation of the water Framework Directive was held in Bucharest Romania. The representative of “Azersu” OJSC made report about the “Transboundary problems of integration of water resources management of Kura Araz basins”. On March 23-24, 2015 “Azersu” delegation visited the kick-off meeting of the World Water Forum which was held in Paris, France. At the meeting preparation issues on VII World Water Forum were discussed. On April 12-17, 2015 Azerbaijan delegation led by the chairman of “Azersu” OJSC Gorkhmaz Huseynov visited the Republic of Korea for attending the 7th World Water Forum. The event was held in Daegu and Gyeongyu cities. Azerbaijan delegation took part in plenary session of the Forum, round tables and various section meetings. During round table meeting the Chairman of “Azersu” OJSC Gorchmaz Huseynov informed about the water supply and sanitation system of Azerbaijan. During the plenary session the Chairman of “Azersu” OJSC reported about the main issues of water supply and sanitation system such as: provision of people with continuous, sustainable and qualitative water, protection of water resources from depletion and for this reason control water usage, avoid polluting water resources, re- treatment of water with deepclean technology and reuse of water and prevention of river basin degredation, improvement of quality standart and norms of water, working out provision of more efficient use of precipitations that caused evaporation in arid zones and integration of water resources management.
For what reasons do you wish your organisation to have a seat on the Board of Governors ? World Water Council in the short period of time achieved to discuss water factor and large scale problems on water in universal dimension, to accept public, economic and political role of water by the world countries. As the result of efforts of World Water Council most of state heads, ministers, state representatives on water sectors, politicians, scientists and specialists gathered for the regulation and solution of varied problems on water sector. The main purpose of World Water Council and the Board of Governors is the provision of people with continuous, sustainable and qualitative water, protection of water resources from depletion and for this reason control water usage, avoid polluting water resources, re- treatment of water with deepclean technology. Significant projects of water sector are implemented in Azerbaijan. In all city and region centers water supply and sanitation systems are recunstructed in the basis of qualitative and sustainable water sources, new drinkable water sources are identified, water processing and treatment plants are constructed basing on innovative technologies, comprehensive measures are implemented for environment protection by wastewater treatment. Surface and underground water resources are revaluated basing on water security provision of the country. Research works are carried out on preparing Integrated Water Resources Management Programs, efficient use of water resources in interior basin, distribution of water resources according to current and perspective demands. Measures are implemented for rehabilitation and reconstruction of drainage and irrigation network in the country, monitoring system is improved and certified laboratories, GIS and SCADA systems are established. All these projects are implemented within the frame of close cooperation with international cooperation agencies. Necessary legal basis was established on water sector management in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan joined several international conventions in the area of environmental protection and it is the first country ratified significant Helsinki Convention on transboundary water between the countries located in Kura and Araz basins. It is a great opportunity for “Azersu” OJSC to have a seat on the Board of Governes, because we can use and share experience with other countries and solve various important problems on water sector.
