About the organization

 
The Association is an international non-governmental, non-political, non-profit, educational organization comprising individuals and organizations interested in water and related matters. For decades, the activities of the Association have been broad and have focused on the following objectives:

  1. Lead and influence water policy and governance. 
  2. Develop and publicize methodological tools for assessment, improvement and conjunctive use of water.
  3. Advance water resources planning, management, development, technology, research and education at international, regional and national levels.
  4. Provide a multidisciplinary forum to address and discuss water issues.
  5. Generate, synthesize and disseminate knowledge and information in the area of water and related resources and the environment.
  6. Encourage, promote and participate in international, regional, national and local pro¬grammes and activities related to water resources for the common benefit of humankind and the biosphere.

About the Governor representative

 

Jun XIA

Dr. Jun Xia is Professor and Director, Center for Water Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has ample experiences on leading water research, managing and consulting jobs both in China and internationally. He has served as Director of the Executive Board, International Water Resources Association (IWRA) for the 2001-2003 period, and as Vice President for the 2003-2006 period.He was appointed as the team leader of Climate Change project on water issue supported by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and DFID China and UK. During the 2006-2008 period, he was invited as the senior consulting expert of EU–China River Basin Management Programme, and Senior Expert, World Bank Office in Beijing, International Consultant on Lake Basin Management etc. He has published extensively in Water Resources Research, Hydrological Sciences Journal, Water International, etc. Dr. Xia was also selected as an External Evaluating Member, IHP-V (1996-2001), UNESCO, and as an Asia Bank’s expert on Water Resources, National Strategies for Soil & Water Conservation (ADB TA 3548-PRC). In 2006, he was selected again as an External Evaluating Member for the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP). With his background and experience, Dr.Xia will undboubtedly contribute with the implementation of the strategy of the WWC on global policy making.

Cecilia TORTAJADA

Dr. Cecilia Tortajada is President of the International Water Resources Association; Visiting Professor of the Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy, Singapore; and Vice President of the Third World Centre for Water Management. She has been an advisor to major international institutions, and has worked in 14 countries in Africa, Asia, North and South America and Europe on various aspects of water resources and environmental management and governance-related issues. She is currently working on formulation of national and international policies for water governance; management of future global environmental and water-related issues; development of innovative approaches for poverty alleviation through water development; and capacity building in the water sector. Dr. Tortajada has been the editor of the International Journal of Water Resources Development for 10 years and has written and edited more than 25 books. With this background, she can play a major role in formulating and implementing the strategy of WWC for global water policy making, on networking and on knowledge dissemination.
